Menopausal Brain Fog

What Is It?

Menopause brain fog* is a collection of cognitive symptoms that can occur during the menopausal transition.

A recent survey of 4000 women revealed that 73% of these women experienced brain fog during the perimenopause and menopause and that 10% of women leave their jobs due to menopausal symptoms such as brain fog (Fawcett Society, 2022).

Examples of how brain fog can present:

  • Difficulty remembering words/numbers.
  • Misplacing items (e.g. keys)
  • Forgetfulness (e.g. dates, events…etc)
  • Reduced concentration.
  • Losing your train of thought.
  • Difficulty switching between tasks.

* Brain fog can be a symptom of other medical conditions too, so it is important that these are also considered when you are reviewed by a clinician.

What Can Be Done To Improve Brain Fog?

  • Regular exercise (>150 mins/week).
  • Stop smoking.
  • Minimise alcohol intake ( < 14 Units).
  • Prioritise good quality sleep (e.g. reduce caffeine, screen-time before bed..etc).
  • Nourish your brain (e.g. Eggs, oily fish, nuts, seeds, dark chocolate, avocado, berries & broccoli).
  • Address stress management & coping strategies.
  • Self-care & relaxation (allow yourself time to switch-off and recharge).
  • Keep your brain active (e.g. learn a new skill, read books, do puzzles…etc)
  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) +/- Testosterone
