Testosterone In Females

EveryWoman Health | Testosterone in Females

Do Females Produce Testosterone?

Testosterone is an important hormone produced in both males and females.

In females, it is produced by both the ovaries and adrenal glands in quantities 3 – 4 times greater than the production of oestrogen. Testosterone levels slowly decline during the reproductive years and even more so after the menopause (along with oestrogen and progesterone hormones) however, the decline in testosterone levels is more marked in those with premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and surgical menopause.

What Are The Symptoms of Low Testosterone Levels?

Low levels of testosterone can contribute to low libido and difficulties in sexual arousal/orgasm as well as low mood, low energy, impaired cognitive function and reduced bone/muscle strength. Many women therefore find that testosterone replacement helps to improve these symptoms.

What Treatments Are Available?

Testosterone replacement is not licensed for women in the UK but can be prescribed off-license by menopause specialists for this clinical indication and creams and gels (through the skin) are the safest form.

Will I Need Blood Tests?

A baseline testosterone level is usually checked before commencing treatment and close blood test monitoring is required to ensure that the testosterone levels do not exceed the normal range for females.
